Boston Guide features Moonbar.

Mooncusser Fish House Moonbar

Happy Friday, Friends! The Boston Guide is still in full swing! I had to share my latest culinary crave: Mooncusser Fish House and Moonbar! There is something about seafood in Boston. There are plenty of hits and misses, but when you find a place that NAILS the concept of Clam Chowder, you can’t help but tell everybody about it. Last week, I had the pleasure of tasting a few of their hot-ticket drinks and menu items and I thought I would share my favorite pics from their menu.

Mooncusser Fish House co-owner Ian Calhoun and co-owner/executive chef Carolyn Johnson recently acquired their Liquor License, which substantially expanded their beverage program. Cocktails, spirits, wines, and beers are finally available at the award-winning Back Bay seafood destination.

Mooncusser Fish House/ Moonbar‘s new cocktail program is being spearheaded by Jay Patterson (Cafe Art Science, Buttermilk & Bourbon). In addition, Chef Carolyn Johnson has added a $1, $3, & $5 bar bites menu from 4 to 6 PM — think Fish Tacos, Ceviche, Pate, Deviled Eggs, and of course $1 Oysters. Menu and photos below and attached. Yes, that means Thursday, Friday and Saturdays too!

But enough of the talk– let’s get into these dishes!! First of the drinks! My absolute FAVORITE drink on their menu is Good Ole Cuban! Absolutely AMAZING! Made with Bacardi 8, Mint, Lime, Amontillado Sherry, Angostura Bitters, Sparkling, the Good Ole Cuban is the perfect happy hour drink!

A drink that came in a close second was Moonbar’s Apple Jalapeno Sour. Never in a million years did I think Apple and Jalapeno would work so well together, but Jay proved me wrong. I got to snag a few shots of Jay making the Apple Jalapeno Sour and the way he takes extra care to measure and place every detail is admirable. I can appreciate a drink made with LOVE! Ingredients: Laird’s BIB Apple Brandy, Slane Irish Whiskey, Bechoravka, Lemon, Jalapeni Demerara, Orange Bitters, Egg White

Their Fish Taco is to die for. I had to stop myself from ordering a couple to go home. It also paired really well with Moonbar’s Fish Taco. Their Fish Taco is to die for. I had to stop myself from ordering a couple to go home.

Since my favorite number is three, I had to try one more drink: Smoked Old Fashion. Ingredients: Old Forester 100, Angostura and Orange Bitter, Sugar, Cinnamon. This drink doesn’t disappoint either. Me and my best love it. Given the area and location of Moonbar, I can easily see myself paying 17 for those drinks. But they hovered around 10-13 dollars!

Now onto my main courses! As I stated before, I don’t think I’ve had a better clam chowder than Moonbar’s! Made with Clams, smoked scallops, skate, creme fraiche, barley crackers, it’ll definitely give you a run for your money! It was super heavy or clammy tasting. It was just right and thankfully NO SEASONING OVERLOAD!

Now onto the next course that you can’t leave without having: Spanish Mackerel Crudo (or fluke, or whatever locally sourced fish of the day). Made with Pomegranate, ginger, orange zest, mint, and pistachio, it has the perfect balance of tarty and sweet. Moonbar was really creative with this one!

After tasting the Crudo, I was in the mood ceviche. Any place that offers ceviche, I am there! I absolutely loooooved Moonbar’s Ceviche! It was made with a Crisp tortilla, cilantro, pickled corn, napa, tomatillo, and smoked chili. It’s like a party in your mouth. One is definitely enough as well.

So after we finished splitting our plates tapas-style, we went right into our main course. Since I’ve been committing to a cleaner eating lifestyle, I sparingly eat beef. So, when I saw the Tuna Burger on the menu, I was sold almost instantly. I was slightly hesitant about it at first because I only like beef burgers– but this ginger, mustard, chilies, and pickled relish burger did not disappoint! Nowadays, if I am crazing a burger, I am going for Moonbar’s Tuna Burger!

You can pretty much see the amazingness jumping off the picture! Okay…I know that was a lot to take in, but I am just saying, you’re missing out on some fine dining if you haven’t been to Moonbar yet! Make sure you follow them on Instagram for updates and announcements! Visit their location at 304 Stuart St 1st floor, Boston, MA 02116, right downstairs from Mooncusser Fish House.

Happy Eating,

Char.
