The Big Fig Mattress: A Mattress for the Fuller Figure

In Fitness & Health

It’s one thing to find clothing and shoes that fully accommodate your size, but to find a mattress that is PERFECT for the fuller figure; that’s a unicorn. Ladies and Gentlemen, I’d like to introduce the Big Fig Mattress. When the team over at Big Fig reached out to me about conducting a review on the Big Fig mattress, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Plus Size Mattress by Big Fig

Sleep is one of the most underrated forms of healing. In my post entitled, Chardline Gets Ready for Grad School I talked about how busy my life is. I work a full-time career as a Fair Housing Investigator, I take night courses twice a week, I am the only person operating this blog, familial obligations never seem to stop, I go to the gym three times a week, and I spend many nights on long bus rides to New York and back.

Can you imagine what the physical toll this has taken on my body? As a plus size woman with lots of junk in the trunk, I often have pains that radiate from my lower back. Upon seeing a physical therapist, she asked me about my physical activity. I mentioned everything I stated above, and she told me how common this was for people my size. She talked about how being bottom heavy tends to add a strain to the back. It’s like a constant pulling down. After a two mile jog, the first place I would begin to feel discomfort is my back. And to make matters worse, this pain worsens as soon as I hit the bed! My back would often sink into the bed, and the lack of support would exacerbate the pain.

After 3 and half months with Big Fig, it takes me less than 5 minutes to fall asleep peacefully. While my physical therapist gave me great suggestions to help build up the strength in my back, it did not help with my painful sleepless nights. But the support of the Big Fig mattress is like no other. My back is fully supported, that means no lower back sinking. The firm yet comfortable support feels like an illusion. I didn’t realize it was possible to achieve both. Even after three months of my mother, my nephew, and I sleeping on the bed, there isn’t any wear on the bed!

In the past, I thought if I purchased a larger bed (meaning upgrading from a Full to King), I wouldn’t rectify the issue. Unfortunately, that just provided a bigger bed, not a supportive one. Also, I tried getting beds that were foam-based. But again, although I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud, the middle of my back would continue to hurt and sink.

Here are some of the amazing features you get with a Big Fig mattress:

*High Density Foam -The Big Fig Mattress is constructed with 3 inches of high-density foam cushioning, with a minimum density of 1.8 pcf (pounds per cubic foot). That’s over 50% denser than the foam in a standard innerspring mattress.

*Hybrid Construction– The Big Fig’s hybrid construction of springs and foam provides the ultimate mix of support and comfort. Individually wrapped coils support the layers of foam to maintain their shape and resilience over time.

*Innerspring System- With 50% more coils than the average premium innerspring mattress on the market, our 1600 count innerspring system actively pushes back against body weight, and provides underlying support.

*Firmer Edge Foam To Keep You Happily In Place– The Big Fig Mattress is designed with the firmest foam around the edges to keep you feeling secure in bed, even close to the edge. Supportive edges also expand the usable sleeping area, making your mattress feel more spacious.

*Tested To Last 20 Years With Published Results
the average lifespan of a traditional mattress is frustratingly short – especially for plus size sleepers. We sent the Big Fig Mattress to an independent testing facility to prove its durability and longevity. We used a heavier weight than normal (350lbs to be exact) to simulate 20 years of use, and the Big Fig passed with flying colors.

…and much much more.

My Big Fig has not only become my beacon of rest, but I often do my homework there too. Before the big figure, I honestly couldn’t wait to start my day because I would do anything to escape my sinking back pains. But now, you might as well send in the jaws of life because I’m not getting off this bed. Also, my mother loves the bed as well! She usually receives cortisone injections for her back issues, but while I was on vacation, she stayed in my room for three weeks. Since then, little by little her back has been showing signs of improvement and less dependency on her muscle relaxers. Her birthday is coming up in March, so I can’t wait to redeem code: FEBFIG  to receive $200.00 off my purchase for her.

A good night’s sleep is truly an investment in your health. With all the hustle and bustle of my life, I needed to prioritize health outcomes. And with Big Fig’s 20-year warranty, HOW CAN YOU LOSE!! Also, please invest in the bed frame because my last bed frame collapsed on me and I was sleeping on a box spring for some time. So this 315lb girl is satisfied. Her mom is going to be satisfied, and I know you will be too!

This is How Fat Girls Look Like When…

In Body Positive, Fitness & Health

“Smile, you are taking a picture.” No. Last time I checked I was working out.

plus size women working out

There was a period in my life where I did not want to workout in front of people. For some reason, when I look at fit gurus, I can never see myself in them. I always see a person who is thin and has epic facial features. But when I looked at myself, I saw a woman with lots of love handles and a double chin that wouldn’t cease movement even after I stopped moving. In the past, when I was asked to promote workout clothes but I always kept it pretty! Maybe 50% of the poses I did were meant to flatter my figure and give the illusion of working out like a boss! Why did I do that?

-insert Mr. Rogers storytime music here-

When I first started taking Zumba classes in 2010, I usually came too late to get a spot in the front of the mirror. Then one day, I got one! I was so excited to see myself go hard in all of my the glory. As we started to move, I found myself so disgusted with what I saw. I was well coordinated and even had all the moves down pack, but when I started to compare myself to the woman next to me, I couldn’t look at myself.

I saw that all three of my rolls were apparent in every waist move I did. I saw that my fupa would occasionally slip out of my leggings and assumed others saw it as well. I was so shocked that I never went back to the mirror and always danced to the furthest left of the class.

Then one day, the Zumba teacher asked if we wouldn’t mind being recorded . Absent-mind I said, “Sure, I love this song.” After she uploaded it on Youtube, my fears INSTANTLY went away. I WAS KILLING IT! I WAS KILLING IT HARDER THAN SOME OF THE SMALLER WOMEN TOO! At that moment, I saw that not only was I killing it, but I also wasn’t afraid to see my rolls and fupa fall out. Since then, all the workouts I do have been for myself–not caring for a single person watching or comparing myself to the person next to me.

So what does a fat girl look like when she’s working out? FUCKING FABOULOUS…just as anyone else who exercises their right to get their workout on!

#FitnessFridays :Plus Size Sports Bras past size 40D

In Fitness & Health, Where to Shop

With my workouts in full swing,  I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you one of the key things to surviving HIIT or my Zumba Classes training: A BOMB SPORTS BRA! Currently, I am 44D. Now I know that it’s not the biggest size…as far as boobs go. But, my workouts are a lot smoother and less exhausting when my breast are strapped down.

According to Overstock, the benefits of a sports bra (vs. a bathing suit bra or your everyday bra) are:

  • Sports bras are best for support during exercise. They are important for maintaining the integrity of the breast wall and the shape of the breast. Too much intense movement can cause ligaments surrounding the breasts to stretch and tear. Much of this damage is irreversible, and it causes drooping, sagging breasts; however, the right sports bra offers enough support to prevent this condition from occurring prematurely.
  • Some sports bras now have storage capabilities. With sports bras designed to hold keys and small MP3 players, there is no need for a bag or a pouch around the waist. Especially popular with runners, these sports bras reduce the number of things you have to carry or stash away. With these items invisibly and securely tucked away, you’ll never have to worry about losing them again.
  • Sports bras can also be very comfortable. Because full-figure sports bras are designed to work more than to flatter, they offer comfort in ways that regular bras cannot. For example, their increased coverage and wider straps distribute breast tissue evenly. Their general lack of underwires, firm ribbing, and delicate fabrics makes it easier for you to move around. Because they minimize breast movement, sports bras also minimize chafing or rubbing.

So if you are part of #TeamWellEndowed, check out these 5 plus size sports bras that’ll get you through even the bounciest of workouts.

Over the past few months, I’ve shared my experiences about my health and fitness challenges on On The Plus Side. From speaking about the priveledges of “looking fit”, to naming a few fitness and health inspirations in my life, I am starting to hone in on this part of my life more. After all, can’t flaunt what my mama gave me if it only looks pretty on the outside. Enter: Fitness Fridays!

Starting in the New Year, I want to take y’all on an interactive journey to the healthiest version of myself. Before you start huffing and puffing by saying things like, “Oh great, another blogger on a weight loss journey” or my favorite ” This post strikes me as an attempt to inject yet another call for weight loss into a movement that is founded on allowing people to accept the imperfections of their bodies”, CUT IT! That’s not my attempt at all. I am taking you on a personal journey that highlights how I am growing to love myself inside and out. I am at a point of where I want to take really take care of myself before it’s too late. This journey is very personal to me because back in 2012, I did this all wrong. In the end, it was a downward spiral that ended in lots of self-hate, spending 100’s on diet pills, and waist trainers. Since then, I’ve made sporadic attempts to get back on track but I was never intentional about it.

Fast forward to 2016, I already had a consultation with a nutritionist (can’t wait to share the details), my cystic condition is slowly getting better (again, I can’t wait to share the details), and I have energy! After my 80 + pound weight gain, I started to notice things about myself that scared me. The lack of energy, the constant staying in bed, my body odor started to change, sex life was completely different, and I developed a cystic condition. Will losing weight change everything? NO…not really, but keeping a healthy relationship with my body will.

Also, I am going to document my daily conquests on my IG page: @Chard.Gets.Fit ! Every two Fridays, I will introduce workout tips, doctor’s visits, workout clothes, natural supplements, self-care tips, and everything in between on all my social media channels and this blog! I encourage everyone to use this as a safe place. As I am learning about myself, please feel free to ask me about anything. I love being a sounding board!

Check out my latest posts on my IG now!

Fun fact, @goldencity_ kickstarted my first go round in the gym. 5 years later, we are back at it ❤️❤️

Lastly, I know many don’t feel that fashion and fitness should be considered in the same realm. In this case, I am not. I would never advocate for someone to lose weight for the sake of fashion or style. But, I won’t be unapologetic and raw with my posts. I won’t hold anything back as it pertains to myself! No comparisons or anything. Just raw reflections as they pertain to me being a better me.

In these last few IG posts, my workout clothes are from Lane Bryant! Lane Bryant was actually the first brand I worked with when it came to workout clothes. With workout clothes that up to size 28, it’s hard not shop there!

5 Ways to Stay on Top of Your Feminine Care

In Fitness & Health
Photo Credit: Moore Gate Aesthetics Feminine Care

I know this may seem a little off-topic, but it’s something that we don’t like to talk about: Feminine Care. While speaking with a friend of mine, he told me that although he has a preference of dating bigger women, he notices that larger women typically have a “stronger” scent than thinner women. Immediately I blamed his choice of women (I know, that was a petty moment) but I have to admit it, even I’ve had my moments. Is it because I am a larger woman?

So after doing some research, I finally found the answer: YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT! This means, no matter what size you are, you have the potential to have a poignant stench if you are polluting your body with a lot of junk. This not only goes for topical areas (places that emit sweat–underarms etc.), but it applies to your vaginal region as well. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, “Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and also the thinnest. Less than one-tenth of an inch separates your body from potential toxins. Worse yet, your skin is highly permeable — especially the skin in and around the vaginal area.”

Another issue that contributes to developing certain body odors is over-perfuming your body or using “feminine care.” Products that alter your body’s pH levels. I know Bath and Body Works carries amazing soap scents, but it can all do a lot of damage to your body if you use it too much. Over the past four years, I’ve dropped the tampons, scented soaps, and feminine washes and replaced them with these 5 products/regimens that have improved my overall natural body odor, vaginal wall tissue, and hopefully bloodstream!

Eating 80/20: I changed the way that I ate. Instead of being careless about what I ate, I was intentional about it. I would use healthy swaps whenever possible. Perfection is not required, trust me it took time for me to get to this point. But I learned how to replace my fav fatty foods with the healthier alternatives. For example, I learned that eating too much pork can be harmful. Pigs carry a variety of parasites in their bodies. Some of these parasites are difficult to kill even when cooking. So instead of pork, I eat chicken with the skin on it. Of course, I indulge from time to time, but I keep it 80/20=80% healthy, 20% “other.” Also, drink lots of water! Water IS LIFE!

Healthy Food Swaps Feminine Care

                                                                Healthy Food Swaps

Feminine Washes: Using products that have lots of chemicals in it as a form cleansing can do the opposite. Products such as Vagisil Anti-Itch Wipes, Lemisol Plus Feminine Wash, CVS Disposable Douche Summer Breeze, Vagisil Feminine Wash, Summer’s Eve Body Powder Cotton Breeze, can severely alter the pH levels (Vaginal pH is a measure of the acidity of the vaginal environment) of your vagina. This altering can cause all sorts of issues such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, and irritation. Now, there is also a whole other host of issues that can cause these types of problems such as allergies to condoms, antibiotics, “leftover tampon” etc., but since washing is something done daily, it’s best to make sure you are doing it correctly.

Feminine Care

  • For me, the best way to clean myself properly has been applying natural methods of care:
Washing: Soap can be very drying to the sensitive skin around your vulva, and you only need to rinse with warm water to keep things clean down there. But, I didn’t grow up like that, so I use scent free soaps . Dr. Bronner’s Tea Tree Pure soap. Not only does is have lots of natural products, but the tingly feeling is also cool (overshare—yah so what lol, you’ll love it). This goes for detergent too. Wash your underwear separately from your clothes.
  • Natural Products that fight bacteria: Ever since I started eating better, I also researched foods that contribute towards a healthy and happy vagina. Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar often use as a cleanser, and I digest it as well. Due to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, apple cider vinegar can be used to fight vaginal odor. Greek Yogurt also has some of these same properties.
  • Tummy Liners are also a great way to keep the area between the belly and vagina clean and dry. My favorite brands so far is Miles Kimball. I work out at least twice a week (which is also very helpful) but the sweat build up is not poppin. These easy apply liners help collect all that sweat during workouts and after. Also, for women who has weight loss surgery, this is a great investment if you developed a lot of extra skin in the stomach area. It reduces irritation by a whole lot.

  • Undies Matter: Making sure you are wearing breathable underwear is important. Cotton is the best way to go!

Safe sex: Wrap it up. I am no gynecologist, but if there’s anything my doctor drilled into my head was to be safe. Infections develop, and some are impossible to treat. You are better safe than sorry.

Tampons: I am still on the fence with this one because I know how much they can be a life saver. But on the flip side, they can also pose threats to your health as well. We can get into this more next week, but I am trying out something called the DIVA CUP. It sounds like the weirdest contraption, but the reviews seem impressive!

Follow up with your gynecologist: Going for routine check ups, cervical screenings, and generals tests are a great way to see if everything is functioning properly. I tell my doctor everything–even the uncomfortable nitty gritty.

These suggestions are not all ONE SIZE FITS ALL methods, but I can attest to the effectiveness of these steps for me. Make sure you do allergy and patch tests before you use any of these products.

What are some suggestions that work for you? Please send me and email! I would love to hear.
