Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant Helped Me with Dermatitis

In Beauty, Fitness & Health

Thank you Tom’s of Maine for sponsoring this post.

As women, our bodies are always changing. Earlier this year, I had major hormone shifts that caused my body to react negatively to my everyday hygiene products. Soaps that I’ve been using for decades instantly caused my skin to break out in hives. Even body moisturizer caused my skin to dry out. But nothing was worse than developing dermatitis from using aluminum-based antiperspirant deodorants. In short, Dermatitis is when your skin becomes irritated by certain allergens. In my case, my aluminum-based antiperspirant deodorants caused a rash like condition under my arms. This would cause my arms to scratch and burn throughout the day. Actually, it got so bad that water would start to hurt. Enter: Tom’s of Maine’s Long Lasting Deodorant – a natural deodorant option with no aluminum or petrochemicals.

Deodorant is the most crucial part of a work woman’s day. I begin my day at 5 am by heading to the gym, then head to my 9-5, and then finish off with grad classes or blog work until 11 pm. With all the hustle and bustle of the day, your deodorant should be the number one reason why you feel and smell fresh. When my dermatologist recommended Tom’s of Maine Deodorant to me, I was skeptical. But when my doctor mentioned Tom’s of Maine uses natural fragrances, as opposed to synthetic,  I questioned whether it would last throughout the day. Nonetheless, I was desperate, and I knew I couldn’t keep using the antiperspirant I had home. After two days of usage, the redness and swelling under my arms started to go down. Ever since then, it’s been a match made in heaven. because I’ve had such a great experience with Tom’s of Maine after my dermatologist recommended it, I was delighted to partner with Tom’s of Maine to learn more about their Long Lasting Natural Deodorant.

So why make the switch? The naturally derived ingredients in Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant not only keep you feeling fresh throughout the day, but you can avoid artificial preservatives and other unwanted ingredients from being continually massaged into your pores.  It’s unfortunate that we are exposed to all types of pollution in the air and our food, so why put them on your body?

And as someone who considers herself an athlete, I constantly have a fear of my deodorant not being strong enough. Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant is a long lasting deodorant that works just as hard as you do. Interested in learning more about my new favorite deodorant on the block? Head to Tom’s of Maine to see if it’s a fit for you! Always consult your doctor when making a change to your hygienic routine.

Til next time,

Dove Intensive Repair for Natural Hair

In Beauty

The summer has a way of damaging my hair like no other. Moreover, since I have a 4b natural hair type, trying to revive my after heat damage and chlorine damage from all the pool parties felt near impossible…until now. So far I have been to three tropical locations, and every time I came back to the United States, my hair would feel unmanageable and brittle. While I have hair products that aid in placating my damaged ends, it was hard finding something that would bring my hair back to life. Moreover, naturalistas, we know the summer struggle is real!

While searching for products that specialize in natural hair care, I stumbled upon  Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. Now, I know that my fellow naturalistas may think I am kidding, but it works! In the past, I have spent over 30.00 dollars in trying to find products that repair my damaged and ends and brittle hair. However, Dove’s Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner does the trick, and it is very affordable. I am usually against using products that have sulfates, but this duo has an ingredient that helps with softening damaged hair: Nutri-Keratin Repair Actives. Keratin is an essential protein that combats frizzy, dry ends. It is every natural girl’s best friend! Kudos to Dove for adding an important ingredient that helps support our tresses!

Since I have purchased the product, I have used it about three times, and the Intensive Repair Conditioner is a perfect co-wash. I live for products that are multi-functional. With today being the second day of a heat wave, I feel at ease about jumping into the pool. Since Dove Intensive Repair works to repair hair and stop 90% of hair damage before it happens, I am ready to enjoy the rest of my summer and my luscious locs!

What are your thoughts? Ready to try Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner? Let me know what your results are!

Until next time,

Book Review: The Bomb Life by Claire Sulmers

In Beauty, Body Positive, Fashion, Inspiration, Interviews

*DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT SPONSORED/NOR WAS I GIVEN THE BOOK. These opinions are 1000% my own*

It was the first week out of school, and I was anxious to delve into something that has NOTHING to do with Urban Policy. Enter: The Bomb Life.

Two weeks ago, I attended Claire Sulmers’ “Conversations with Claire.” And while the conversations were fruitful and the drinks were flowing, I wanted to learn more about the Fashion Bomb brand and how Claire rose to be the force that she is today. At the time, I wasn’t curious about being a boss, bombshell, and beauty–but after reading her book, I realized that I have potential to be someone/something more. Also, since I was featured on Fashion Bomb Daily in the past,  so you already know my interests were piqued before attending the event. Before we get into the book, just wanted to give a little bio on the Fashion Bomb Daily:

Created in August 2006 by journalist Claire Sulmers, Fashion Bomb Daily provides daily doses of chic to savvy stylistas. Recognizing there were few print and online sources for multicultural fashion, Claire took her interests in style and writing to create the number one online destination for global chic seekers with a penchant for all things fabulous. Readers log on to The Fashion Bomb for its fresh takes on fashion news and stories, along with its boutique spotlights, exclusive editorials, magazine scans, fashion show reviews, trends, wardrobe advice, celebrity looks for less, and tips on how to break into the industry from the best in the business. With 2.4 million monthly visitors, The Fashion Bomb made Ebony Magazine’s 2011 Power 100 List, while Claire was named Black Blogger of the Month by Black Enterprise, and was dubbed Blogger of the Moment by Teen Vogue. Well respected in the industry, The Fashion Bomb has been referenced in New York Magazine, featured in Glamour, and quoted in Time. Claire is a regular contributor to Essence.com and Vogue.it.

BOSS right? Now, I know that this life isn’t for everyone. In fact, I am starting to realize that this life may not be for me, either. But, if there’s anything that I learned from The Bomb Life, it’s the power of hard work, sacrifice, gut instinct, and playing the part! In this stunning memoir and self-help book, she tells what she had to do to get to the top, and offers aspiring bloggers and digital influencers tips on how to monetize their sites, build an audience, and ultimately live the Bomb Life.

-Sets the scene-

When I first picked up the book, I was commuting to-day 1 of my Fair Housing Training in Washington, DC. Eager to finally read something that didn’t come from a course catalog, I immediately started to flip the titles of The Bomb Life. I saw that the book wasn’t lengthy so I committed myself to two chapters a day. The first chapter immediately hooked me in. Claire’s life reminded me of mine. Not only is she Haitian, but her parents worked hard to send her to private schools. Claire’s humble beginnings show that she was brilliant and stayed true to who she was–much like myself. She had her fair share of bullies, over-wore her “most popular” item in her closet and had to deal with parents who were “anti your creative dream”. I know this all too well because my mom loved her some bargains and still doesn’t know why I blog. Suffice to say, they usually come around.

As I continued to read, she started to find out who she really wanted to be. She went to Harvard and killed it; she persisted in finding opportunities to advance herself in the field of journalism, and then she took the leap of faith that I still have yet to carry out: the move to NY. From there, she landed a gig as an intern for a well-known publication, but still faced the issues of working in an “it’s who you know/who knows you” industry. But the endearing part of it all is, that never stopped her. She kept working hard!

Picture Creds: Comme Coco

From gatecrashing high-end fashion shows to walking around the streets of Paris to find the most stylish people for Vogue.fr, Claire was on a mission! I found her passion for fashion, her reasonable application of life’s lessons, and even her lust for creating her own lane inspiring. Even when reading about her love story gone wrong, it made her seem more REAL. Once you’ve read about her drug dealing ex-boyfriend, you might instantly start seeing similarities lol …not that I dated a drug dealer…I’ll shut up now.

All while Claire launched her blog Fashion Bomb Daily, she was still working her way to the top. She multi-tasked, wrote blog posts until wee hours of the night/morning, faced the backlash from other bloggers, took rejection from MANY people in the industry, put herself out in the mainstream, and to this day, SHE’S STILL ROCKING IT! Knowing me, I probably would have stopped.

Pic Creds: Fashion Bomb Daily

Because this is a relatively short book (or maybe it’s short for me because I am used to reading 1500 pages a week for school), I kept the synopsis short and sweet! I really urge you to buy the book and read it on your own. Why? Well here are five reasons why reading The Bomb Life is GOALS!

Faith

Any book that includes even a bit of prayer/trust in God GETS ME! Even though I am trying to figure out who I am today, I am grateful for the lessons that God teaches me along the route. I know that everyone doesn’t ascribe to a specific faith, but I honestly don’t know where I would be without HIM.

Letters to Younger Self

At the end of the book, Claire writes letters to her younger self. Those letters are POWERFUL! No, they aren’t written in prolific conundrums or use crazy rhetorical devices, but instead, her letters give clear examples of how to learn to love yourself better, learn to wait for love (my biggest challenge) learn to trust the process and learning that the world is yours for the taking.

Blogging/Digital Influencer Advice

To be honest y’all, I’ve been sitting on the fence with this whole blogging thing. Social media is double-edged sword. On the one hand, you can make your coins, connect with others around the globe, and even gain valuable knowledge or today’s news. But on the contrary, you can feel really shitty about yourself. You subject yourself to developing low self-esteem, the feeling of having to keep up the Joneses, and I’ve been in positions where social media has affected my relationships. Scary right? But Claire provides a positive spin on social media. From tips on a establishing your domain to ways to marketing yourself better, Claire drops two chapters of gems SPECIFICALLY to social media + brand building.  But, if you read the book from cover to cover, you will see the book is just oozing with gems on how to build your brand OVERALL.

Personal Appearance Advice

Every time I see Claire, she looks AMAZING! One time I saw her on the plane at 5 am and she looked like she just came back from a hot date! Admittedly, I looked like a hobo, so I didn’t even try to say hi. However, in her novel, she speaks on how she consulted with image consultants and brand experts to refine her look. She gives advice on how to play up your features and to always be “ON” because you never know who’s watching. Who knows, if Claire looked the way I was looking that day I saw her at the ATL airport, I probably wouldn’t have noticed her. So what am I doing now? BUDGETING–budgeting my wardrobe, hair, makeup, and nails. For a while, I was trying to dress sexier so that my love interest would lust over me like all the girls he fawns over. But in the midst of that, I failed lol. I tried to be sexy with a hint of who I am at the core. So imagine Blair Waldorf meets a BBW entertainer? YEA! To that end, in the next few weeks, I’m going to take you on an interactive journey with my image consultant.

Staying True to You

In Claire’s book, she gave so many examples where she could’ve been petty, foul, and even threw a wad of cash in people’s faces. But, that’s not who she is. From sleuthing interns to over zealous bloggers, Claire maintained her composure, didn’t have sleep with anyone to get where she is, and kept it pushing! It’s hard to maintain who you are once you enter an industry. I’ve watched bloggers and models who were so down to earth become some of the most unpleasant people to be around. In fact, one of them is —oops, Claire advises against talking bad about others…nothing but bad karma ensues.— Don’t let the fame and fortune get to you.

I give this book an A+!

5 Ways to Pamper Yourself on Valentine’s Day #VdayWithPSBU

In Beauty, Body Positive, Where to Shop

Over the past few years, it’s become increasingly popular to make sure we self-pamper during Valentine’s Day. The guilt-free feeling when purchasing your favorite item or heading to a spa is unmatched.  This year, I wanted to share five ways that I pamper myself during Valentine’s Day.

So for me, Valentine’s Day is all about being in a constant state of love and euphoria.  During the weekend of Valentine’s Day, I try to accomplish the following:

*Caution, I prepare for this day ONE YEAR in advance, so some of this may seem costly–but of course, I provide alternatives*

Paying Off a School Loan

Image: Credit.com

Way to start off on the unconventional route huh? A few of my stressors come from $40,000 worth of school loans I have to pay for over the next 10 years. Although I finance them like no tomorrow, nothing feels better than paying off a loan. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulder and like my credit score went up. Well barely, but it certainly puts me closer to buying my first home. There are two ways I’ve done this:

a. Saving a portion of my check every month.
b. File my taxes and apply 75% of my returns to the loan.

Buy a great quality item

Image: Top10for.com

In 2015, I told myself that I would invest in things that produce longevity. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a deal or even a cheaper manufactured item because these pockets are not deep, but Valentine’s Day is all about treating yourself. Since my last name is Chanel, I thought I would get something under $2,000.00 . Good luck right? Well actually, ever since I was 18 years old, I wanted to get Chanel Number 5. So this year, not only am I get one bottle, but I am getting Chanel N 5 New and the classic. I love scents more than I should.

If this seems like too much commitment, but you really want to try new scents, you should check out Scentbird! I received some of the BEST perfumes from this service, and it’s only 14.95 a month. All you have to do is fill out a questionnaire and then travel size amounts are delivered to you! I love love LOVE IT!

Journaling

Image: Myoneword.org

This has to be the least expensive thing you can do, but it provides the most return. I always take the time to journal about why I love myself. Analyzing everything apart from what guys have said about me or what family members appreciate about me. I write down things that I want to keep working on and ways in which I can learn to love myself more and more. The way you love yourself sets the standard for the way you give love to others.

For example, if I don’t love myself—this can be a catalyst for me not to love another person, over-obsess over someone because I want that feeling, or love someone because you notice how much they love themselves. Always look for at least one thing to appreciate about yourself. It makes all the difference. And you don’t have to do this only do it on Valentine’s Day! In fact, you can do it at any time. But on the days you are feeling down, refer back to that entry–it will provide some comfort!

Full Body Massage

Image: mangwanani.co.za

Yup, cliche but after a year of paying bills and taking care of others, all you want to do is relax and escape. On Groupon, I found a nice deal for a full body massage and you can couple it with a Mani/Pedi and facial for 100.00. The best time to look for deals is during Valentine’s Day because the “Good for Gifting” option is usually the best section on Groupon.

Buy Something for Someone

I know this post is supposed to be all about you, but nothing makes me happier (aside from paying off student loans) than seeing someone smile! Just a little gift that says “thinking of you” or “your beard looked a little whack so here’s something!” One product that is flying off the online shelves is Harry’s.  Harry’s is a New York-based company that manufactures and sells shaving equipment via mail order. I gave this to my brother once, and now he religiously buys their products.

So don’t fret if you aren’t celebrating this holiday with a special someone…because the most specialist(lol) person out there is YOU!

And if you are celebrating it with someone, don’t forget to share whatever candy you get–my mailbox is waiting.

Happy V-Day,
Char.

SAG Awards 2017 Nominee’s Beauty Challenge

In Beauty

Over the weekend, I finally got around to see the SAG nominated film, Hidden Figures. Not only did I feel empowered as a black woman, but I looked at my all progression as personal and communal wins! Also, I loved seeing Taraji P Henson, who played Katherine Johnson, in a whole other element. She did THAT! In the spirit of the SAG Awards creeping up, a few of my blogger friends and I thought it would be cool to participate in a SAG Awards 2017 Nominee’s Beauty Challenge. Each participant in the beauty challenge will create a look from someone on the nominee list. Since Hidden Figures left me speechless, I chose to recreate the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture – Hidden Figures. More specifically, I wanted Taraji’s look. It was simple, beautiful, and reminds me of something I would wear to work on most days.

Before I get into the products that I used, here’s the final product.

Let’s talk about these brows! Now, most of you know I don’t get my eyebrows done. I grew up with a strict Haitian mother and by the time I was of age to start making decisions for myself (in her eyes of course) my eyebrows pretty much looked beautiful to me…never thought about getting them done. But I’m not going to lie, some days I want to make them look shaped up without the hassle of having to get them threaded or waxed.

Palladio has an amazing brow definer that gives my brows a quick pick me without the having to pluck or tweeze! Also, their products are enriched with Ginseng, Green Tea, Gingko Biloba, Vitamin E and natural humectants and skin soothers such as Aloe Vera and Chamomile.

SAG AWARDS 2017 BEAUTY LOOK

In combination with the brow definer, I used two products from City Color Cosmetics: Mattifying Balm and Brow Quad. Before I started, I applied the Mattifying Balm as a primer. It goes on glossy and allows for a seemingly poreless finish! The Brow Quad gave more of a natural color for my eyes brows after using Palladio’s Brow Definer.

The next item I used was the Firming DMAE Eye Lift. I naturally have baggy eyes, and they often take away from any eye shadow or lash extensions I apply. Instead of using lots of concealer, I added a little bit of Derma E’s eye lift, and it truly made a difference. After using my Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation (which is one the best full coverage foundations I’ve used), I topped off my look with e.l.f. Cosmetics Velvet Matte Lipstick.

So what do you think? I know I don’t do many makeup hauls, or skin care regiments on the blog, but why not try now?

Want to see other girls? Check out my friend and blogger boo Kurvy Katie’s SAG Awards 2017 look! Hope you enjoyed my first beauty post!! And if you want to find the items, click on the text or the pictures! Also a huge shout out to Face by Trace! She’s my dear friend and makeup artist that helped me execute this look! She actually does all my looks!
