Breast Cancer Awareness with Catherines’ Plus Size

In Fitness & Health, Inspiration

Since the inception of the blog, I would end October with a breast cancer awareness post. When I was 16 years old, I lost one of my aunts to breast cancer. The following year, I lost a close mentor to breast cancer. For as long as I could remember, my life has been surrounded by victors and angels who’ve battled breast cancer. And for my family, it especially hits close to home. Instead of educating each other about the BRCA gene, we avoided the subject altogether. With each person we have lost due to breast cancer, we grew more silent and, at times, isolated from each other. This is why every year I am committed to writing a post about breast cancer awareness! Today, I wanted to shed light on a brand that is dedicated to breast cancer awareness and finding a cure!

Catherines’ Plus Size, a clothing brand that caters to women sizes 16W-34W and 0X-5X, has partnered with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Throughout the entire month of October, Catherines will offer a limited-edition eight-piece BCRF capsule collection including activewear, sleepwear, fashion styles and a pink ribbon pin. 10% of all proceeds from this collection will be donated to BCRF. Along with the capsule collection, customers can contribute to the BCRF with our “register round-up” campaign. Customers making in-store purchases can be rounded up to the nearest dollar or amount of their choice, with the difference going to BCRF. Catherines is also introducing a coupon book, valid during the month of November, in return for a $5 donation.

And while my friends and family could not making it to a breast cancer walk due to familial hospitalizations, we still find ways to give back! I wanted to partner with my aunt who is a survivor of breast cancer, but life often has a way telling us to heal first. Even though we only have a few more days left in October, Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Catherines’ Plus Size work every day to give back to and look for the cure for breast cancer!

Check out their options; I am wearing the Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon Tee!

Love you all,
Char.

Sis Mix-a-lot feat. Who What Wear

In Personal Style

It’s been awhile since I’ve done some pattern blocking. And with the arrival of cold weather, mixing patterns and blazers are the new norm. Today, I wanted to feature some of my latest purchases from Target’s Who What Wear Collection.

This form of pattern block is new to me. While I loved both the Ruffle Poplin Blouse and the Who What Wear™ Cheetah Print jacket, as standalone pieces, seeing them together really made a statement for me. This might be because I grew up in Catholic Schools and my skirts colored block 5 types of vomit green. Anywho, I really thought these two pieces would pop!

But I didn’t want to get carried away with myself so wearing my dark blue jeans and black pumps really helped compliment the colors in Ruffle Poplin Blouse and Who What Wear™ Cheetah Print jacket. The blue hues in the denim went well with the blue stripes, and the black pumps matched the cheetah print. Once you’ve found a way to color block two intricate items, wearing them items separately should be easy.

So what do you think?

Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant Helped Me with Dermatitis

In Beauty, Fitness & Health

Thank you Tom’s of Maine for sponsoring this post.

As women, our bodies are always changing. Earlier this year, I had major hormone shifts that caused my body to react negatively to my everyday hygiene products. Soaps that I’ve been using for decades instantly caused my skin to break out in hives. Even body moisturizer caused my skin to dry out. But nothing was worse than developing dermatitis from using aluminum-based antiperspirant deodorants. In short, Dermatitis is when your skin becomes irritated by certain allergens. In my case, my aluminum-based antiperspirant deodorants caused a rash like condition under my arms. This would cause my arms to scratch and burn throughout the day. Actually, it got so bad that water would start to hurt. Enter: Tom’s of Maine’s Long Lasting Deodorant – a natural deodorant option with no aluminum or petrochemicals.

Deodorant is the most crucial part of a work woman’s day. I begin my day at 5 am by heading to the gym, then head to my 9-5, and then finish off with grad classes or blog work until 11 pm. With all the hustle and bustle of the day, your deodorant should be the number one reason why you feel and smell fresh. When my dermatologist recommended Tom’s of Maine Deodorant to me, I was skeptical. But when my doctor mentioned Tom’s of Maine uses natural fragrances, as opposed to synthetic,  I questioned whether it would last throughout the day. Nonetheless, I was desperate, and I knew I couldn’t keep using the antiperspirant I had home. After two days of usage, the redness and swelling under my arms started to go down. Ever since then, it’s been a match made in heaven. because I’ve had such a great experience with Tom’s of Maine after my dermatologist recommended it, I was delighted to partner with Tom’s of Maine to learn more about their Long Lasting Natural Deodorant.

So why make the switch? The naturally derived ingredients in Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant not only keep you feeling fresh throughout the day, but you can avoid artificial preservatives and other unwanted ingredients from being continually massaged into your pores.  It’s unfortunate that we are exposed to all types of pollution in the air and our food, so why put them on your body?

And as someone who considers herself an athlete, I constantly have a fear of my deodorant not being strong enough. Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant is a long lasting deodorant that works just as hard as you do. Interested in learning more about my new favorite deodorant on the block? Head to Tom’s of Maine to see if it’s a fit for you! Always consult your doctor when making a change to your hygienic routine.

Til next time,

Char.

International Day of the Girl Child

In Body Positive, Inspiration, Lifestyle

According to Unicef,  since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

I am not one to cast a shadow on challenges of others…if you believe you are going through a problem, you, my friend are going through it. When people would say “I wish I were rich, I wouldn’t be going through this problem,” I often argue that wealthy people have a whole other set of issues that money can’t resolve. Unfortunately, as women in a 90% patriarchal world, we collectively go through a lot of the same issues.

Unequal pay, telling women they are playing “victim” when they go through rape, national leaders telling us what to do with our sexual organs (even condoning mutilation), fat shaming, barring access to education and driving, and the list goes on an on. And as much as I wish we were living through lines of Tupac’s “Dear Mama” song, we’re not.

I don’t advocate to be a feminist, but I do advocate for our human rights! I believe that we deserve to treat each other with the utmost understanding and respect. And even if it’s too late to do it now, we gotta start with youth…we shouldn’t have to condition young girls and women into believing that this is all society has to offer them. At the bare minimum, OUR HUMAN RIGHTS!

Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women. If efficiently supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders. An investment in realizing the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability. – Unicef.

So please, if you see a little girl today–even if it’s for three seconds, let them know they are appreciated and that they can put anything they set their mind to! When I was younger, images of women running shit were far and few. I wish I could have told myself that the buck doesn’t stop with what “they” tell you to do…keep pushing sis.

Plus Size Pyjama jacket

Pyjamas By Day

In Fashion, Personal Style

Ever fall in love with a trend at first sight? That’s how I felt when I saw Maggie Gyllenhaal and Chanel Iman rocking their Pyjamas jackets. Today, I share my take on the plus size pyjama jacket by Simply Be. +

Maggie Gyllenhaal from Vogue UK

Chanel Iman from Vogue UK.

While I’ve seen most celebrities wear their Pyjama jackets with a coordinating pant, like this one from Simply Be , I want to test out its versatility. At first, I was thinking of color blocking with other floral capris or even a black pleated skirt. But I decided to go basic with this one: distressed denim jeans. Like how can you not win?? The blue hues compliment each other, and my nude heels bring out the beige undertones in the jacket!

How would you rock the pyjama trend? Soon, we are going to explore my favorite trend of the fall: Wearable Lingerie!! Can’t wait to share it with you!
