Getting My Cookie Lyon’s On- Furs in the Winter

In Personal Style

Happy Monday!

One of the most influential “characters” in my world of style is Cookie Lyons. She’s sassy and her fashion sense is adventurous! Ever since I saw her in a fur jacket on the first episode of Empire, I knew I had to get one!

My biggest issue in the past was finding a fur jacket (or faux fur) that could get through my 19 inch-in-circumference- arms. This year, Ashley Stewart released about 10+ furs and I couldn’t wait to snag about 4 of them! Paired with a white dress, I seriously thought I was a lost cast member from Empire.  So here’s my rendition of Cookie Lyon: The Fatties Edition!

Finding a white dress is always a struggle for me. Not that there aren’t offerings out there, but finding a quality white dress is hard to find. Many dresses I tried on left nothing to the imagination. Honestly, you could my birthmarks…so that’s a no-no! But when I found this dress from Fashion to Figure, I was relieved. The material is thick but stretchy enough to allow me to move. I would size up with any bodycon, unless your undergarments are on fleek!

The key to a good fur jacket is to make sure it can cover your body at all angles. Now let’s face it, these jackets can be bulky when worn in its intent. Whether you wear it off the shoulder or tie it around the waist, feel free to play around with it.  I actually had a lot of fun shooting in this outfit. I took the pictures in a place where many tourists visit and they were taking pictures of me as well…weird…but I don’t care.

So if you are looking for a great white dress, head over to Fashion  to Figure.

And if you are looking for furs, make sure you check out Ashley Stewart, especially their in-store selection!

What did you think? What are some other ways you would style this fur?

*Special thank you to my team!*

Key of Gorgeous Hair/HairMeOut, these are crochets but don’t they look like real Senegelese twists?

Swimsuit Round-Up

Happy Hump Day All!

With the frigid temps plummeting and Ugg boots becoming a permanent part of everyday apparel, there’s no better feeling than to look towards the summer. Last Summer, I spent more time in bathing suits than I did in an other outfit. From LA to FL and everywhere in between, I wore my bathing suits proudly. The summer before, it was a little harder for me to wear them because of the ridicule I faced on a popular website “OH YOU FANCY”. But today, you can put me on TMZ, and I don’t have a care in the world. Either you give flying saucer about what others think or you work on being the best version of yourself…and that includes wearing whatever you want UNAPOLOGETICALLY!

If you are ever in a rut in which loving yourself is hard or being able to fathom yourself in a two piece is scary, please take a look at Rachel Estapa’s More to Love curriculum. No matter what the shape or size, we all have fallen victim to feeling insecure in one way or another. Rachel created More to Love (MTL) as an opportunity for you to learn and apply body acceptance, no matter your size. Check it out!

Now for the juicy: Swimsuits!  Here is part one of my top 5 brands for bathing suits! These brands are all brands that I’ve worn in the past so I can attest to the quality of their pieces. All of these pieces range from $$$$ – $$.

Monif C- Of course Monif C has to be my number one choice. The first bathing suit that I ever wore was from Monif C. To me, she is the fairy godmother of bikinis for plus size women! Monif C didn’t waste any time either! In January, I was already receiving notifications of her upcoming line! One thing I can say about her pieces is that they have great compression and coverage. I hate bathing suits that cut into my rolls or allow sections of my body to slip out. Check out my picks below! And if you want to see more, visit Monif C.

Lane Bryant– With LB’s new ad in Swimsuit Illustrated, why not highlight a brand that is consistently working hard to listen to the concerns of plus size women. You may be familiar with their campaigns such as, #IamNoAngel or #PlusIsEqual but Lane Bryant works hard. Their work goes beyond their hashtags. But they put millions of dollars to initiate campaigns to help plus size women become part of mainstream society…not just in fashion! Last summer, I got my most complimented bathing suit from Lane Bryant. They are one of the best brands to have FULL SUPPORT when it comes to their bras and briefs! Here are my top picks:

Target- Target is a department store that I am coming to love! With options that array from tankinis to bikinis, they have a vast assortment of bathing suits. I’m not even kidding, I scrolled through 6 pages of options! They are also on they affordable side of the spectrum, therefore looking great on a budget doesn’t seem like such a task. While in Vegas, I wore one of their Ava and Viv bathing suits and two straight-sized women demanded that I find it for them in their size. LOL, SORRY…IT DOESN’T COME IN YOUR SIZE sounded like a foreign language to her. Here are my top picks from Target:

Swimsuits For All – Swimsuits For All has some real jaw dropping bathing suits. I legit want to take all of them. I bought an emergency swimsuit from them two years ago and have rocked with them ever since. Although their swim models photograph on the smaller side, when they launch campaigns they use models that are fuller. But seeing that their sizes range from 8+, I think they are a great! Their swimsuits range from conservative to classy, with a little room to play in between. Here are my top picks from Swimsuits for All:

s1 s2 s3 s4

Modcloth- Modcloth as always been one of my favorites! They offer basic and  retro style swimsuits that are made of SUPERB quality. Superb may be and understatement but I really do love their swimsuits. Ranging from a size 00-30, Modcloth carries some of the most unique bathing suits! Here are my top picks for Modcloth:

mm1 mm2 mm3 mm4

There you have it, here are my top 5 brands for swimsuits! Now this is only PART ONE! Part two will feature some of the brands who typically release their collections in the Spring. But to make things more spicy, you’ll be able to see 5 bathing suits on YOURS TRULY! I know how hard it is to shop for a bathing suit when you don’t know how it’s going to look on a woman with visible rolls, cellulite etc! So hopefully you’ll get an idea!

Until next time,

That 70’s Show- Bell Bottoms and Vests

In Personal Style

Happy Friday! Can you believe it? My long weekend starts now and I’m still trying to get my post done right before me and my best friend leave. But I knew I couldn’t leave without posting something for y’all! So as of late I’ve been really getting into this “look”. I am not sure what you would call it but here are some looks that I loved! I guess we can say it’s a 2016 rendition of the 70’s.

So in my search to curate this look, I knew the perfect place to find each of these items. Forever 21  never fails to have every piece of the puzzle.

Forever 21

From the vest, to the sweater, I found this whole look with ease. Forever 21 is often called the one stop shop of fast fashion because you can find almost anything you need.

Paired with my favorite pair of booties from Rainbows, my hat from Aerie, and bag from H&M, it was done deal! If you couldn’t tell from my past posts, I love to frequent fast fashion places. Not because I’m broke but because they are, at time, the most breathable pieces.

A Perfect Day in Brooklyn

In Plus Size Fashion

I hate Winter. I am thankful to be alive though!
Winter is brutal. It dries out my skin, I have to buy and extra coconut oil so that I won’t get ashy. I have to wear extra layers to stay warm. In the winter buses seem to take longer and the train stations are too cold. Cabs don’t stop and cars take too long to warm up!! But that’s the least of my worries. It’s dressing up in the winter that raises my brow! I am already big and dressing in layers makes me feel like a walking tank. Or that I’m  in a straight jacket. When we have warm days, I get excited! Living in NY, you never know what the day is going to look like ; but the minute I see kids at the park, I know it’s warmer than usual!

Today was one of those days so I decided to spend time with my family! Carpe Diem. Tompkins Park, in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn seemed fit the scene.

The Heathen Republic sweat shirt by Heathen Kouture shows progression -shameless plug, sue me lol-
Sometimes when it’s warm out we start busting out our summer’s best, but I saw some snotty kids running around outside my window. That means Winter is still in effect so a Spring look will have to do.

The jeans are from Old Navy. Old Navy has a bunch of denim looks that cater to different sizes.  They are slowly becoming my favorite store for denim. The Ugg Butte  are comfortable for any weather. My feet are big (size 15)  and the boots are lite and good for any season except for summer. The UGGpure™ wool in sole on the inside of the boot will keep your feet warm!
